Susi Gelb is something of an alchemist – testing materials, processes, new technologies and interactions. In her artistic work, she combines natural materials with archaic techniques and new technologies. She experiments with different chemical processes and intelligent materials, uses polyester, concrete or epoxy resin and thus develops her works of art which have a certain life of their own. Like moveable pieces of scenery, different elements of reality invite us to immerse ourselves in them. Creating their own atmosphere, they appear like the test set-up for larger terraforming experiments.
Her objects seem like time capsules. The choice of materials is timeless as well as futuristic. It is precisely these unusual combi- nations of materials that create tension. The topic of systematics plays a major role in her artistic work.
Her multimedia installations become living settings and question the existing classifications of natural and artificial. With her own artistic language, she creates multimedia spatial landscapes.
Susi’s complex working steps are laid out like a network of roots; there is no linear narration and no hierarchies. Rather, the network consists of many cross-references that come from the most diver- se fields of expertise, knowledge and research.
Susi’s recent exhibitions include „user-defined landscape“ at Nir Altman, Munich (2020), „49 °“ at Long Studio Fogo Island, Canada (2019), mythe en place at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2018) and a large public art project in downtown Munich „No Such Things Grow Here“ (2017).
In 2015, Susi Gelb founded a nomadic project space called easy!upstream in Munich together with artist Niko Abramidis&NE and the artist and cultural journalist Quirin Brunnmeier.
Susi Gelb lives in Munich and Berlin.
